If you had to pick one event that changed the perception of professional windsurfing in the eyes of the general public, the Maui Windsurfing Grand Prix 1982 would be one of the greatest examples.

The historical competition got underway in 18 knots of wind, 10-foot wave sets, and attracted sailors from Japan, Africa, England, Switzerland, Australia, and North America. Tom Tatum filmed the windsurfing contest that defined a new era for the sport. ......( more )

World Sailing, the world governing body of the sport, is pleased to announce that Sanya, China will host the 2017 edition of the Youth Sailing World Championships.
 
As the premier event in youth sailing, more than 400 sailors from over 60 nations are expected to compete on the waters off Hainan Island from 09-16 December 2017.......( more )

New Race Format for 2017 RS:X Class Events

Following the 2016 World Sailing Annual Conference in Barcelona, where all Olympic events were 'locked' confirmed back for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where it was requested to to all Olympic classes to review with proposals, their racing format in order to have the regattas more easy to understand for media and for spectators at the venue.

All Olympic classes started to work with their race formats and it was agreed that the 2017 year would be the best time to test and eventually to implement a new race format to be used at 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.  More on the RSX Class website . . .

The RS:One Class, in partnership with the Vietnam Canoeing, Rowing & Sailing Federation will hold the 2017 RS:One World Championships from 10th to 15th June in Hoi An, Vietnam.

The championship, open to all, will allow international racers to compete through innovative race formats like the Pulsar (compact slalom, America's Cup style) and Marathon (long distance). Courses will be set up in a way that the on-shore audience can enjoy the racing.......( more )

World Sailing's headquarters will relocate from Southampton to central London, UK in late summer 2017. 

The selection of London as the new home for the International Federation comes after an extensive evaluation process of possible locations undertaken since the election of a new President and Board of Directors in November 2016.......( more )

The notorious Lancelin wind finally came through just after lunch time, with competitors anxious to get in the water at Ledge Point and compete for the title of fastest windsurfer, kitesurfer or paddler in the Lancelin Ocean Classic.

Windsurfers and kitesurfers entered the water at the same time, delivering an absolute spectacle on the horizon for onlookers on the beach. The competition was tooth and nail between Allen and kitesurfer Alty Frisby.......( more )

The 36th Singapore Open Windsurfing Championships featured a few classes but it was the RS One Class that dominated with 42 windsurfers competing in that class - 25 men, 12 women and 5 'grandmasters'.......( more )

At the beginning of December the American Windsurfing Tour (AWT) released their 2017 tour calendar and at the same time announced a change of their name to International Windsurfing Tour (IWT). We hooked up with Sam Bittner, who founded the tour 7 years ago, because we wanted to know more about the background of this change of name.

Patrik Pollak has produced stunning 2017 calendars for both the Bic Techno 293 and Raceboard Classes.  Have you downloaded yours yet?

Make sure that after printing the pair pages you twist the papers 180 degrees because the calendar binds according to the picture.

Introducing the World Sailing App.  Compiled by World Sailing, (the international authority for sailing) The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) govern all aspects of yacht racing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and dinghy racing, and it's up to each competitor, race official and coach to know them.

Now a nifty downloadable App, compiled by World Sailing (the international authority for sailing) in partnership with the RYA, the App gives full access to the latest published Racing Rules of Sailing (2017-2020).  In addition, the App gives access to case studies, call books and guidance notes, making the rules more user friendly and accessible wherever you are.  Full article . . .
