New Zealand Nationals, Final Day
Posted On:  01/02/2006

Release by A.Cozzolino

Day four of the NZ Nationals was much like the preceding two days, light and fickle Nor-easterlies. The final three races were completed in 5-8 knots on reasonably flat water under a hot, unforgiving, New Zealand sun.

Jon-Paul Tobin started the day with another first, followed by a second in Race 2 while rival Tom Ashley placed third in Race 1 then narrowly taking the victory from Tobin in Race 2. Ashley and Tobin's results meant that they did not have to sail Race 12 as overall positions would not change. However it was quite a different story for competitors sitting in 3rd to 5th places with only 2 points separating them so the final race was crucial. Robertson, Myszka and Miarczynski finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th giving the Polish 3rd and 4th and New Zealand 5th.

In the Women's fleet Anna Eason had a comfortable lead and did not sail the last race. Finished on 26 points, 5 points ahead of Hayley Thom in second, followed closely by Justina Sellers just 1 point behind.

Both Ashley and Eason were Awarded the New Zealand RS:X National Champion title for 2006.

Sailors were pleased with the organisation of the event and the professionalism of the Race Committee. Although conditions were not ideal the regatta was enjoyed by all.
The Event was sponsored by: Cult Surfwear, Bic Sport, Line 7 and the Lion Foundation.
