| Ricardo Campelllo And Daida Moreno Clinch The PWA 2003 Overall Freestyle Titles!
Saturday December 6, 2003
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eighteen-year-old Ricardo Campello (JP, Neil Pryde) had reason to celebrate today after clinching the PWA overall freestyle title here on the fourth day of the PWA, Bonaire, freestyle finals. In the race for the King of the Caribbean Campello needs to advance through one more heat in the last double elimination to ensure a double celebration. After defeating his Brazilian training partner Kauli Seadi (AHD, Naish) in heat 65 of the men’s double elimination this morning, Campello went on to convincingly defeat Taty Frans (Gaastra, AHD) twice, to take victory in the third round of the men’s double elimination. Meanwhile in the women’s seesaw battle between Karin Jaggi (F2, Arrows) and Daida Moreno (Mistral, North) for the overall and the Queen of the Caribbean title, Moreno struck back and to take the third double elimination with her best performances to date of the competition. She then went on to win the final of the fourth women’s single elimination that was all she needed to wrap up the PWA Overall and the Queen of the Caribbean titles.
Contrary to the local forecasts the trades were still blowing in the 10-20 knot range today maintaining their one hundred per cent record here so far at the 2003 PWA freestyle finals. The mornings double elimination saw Kauli Seadi of Brazil advance through three tough heats against Diony Guadagnino (Neil, Pryde), Kevin Mevissen (JP, Neil Pryde) and Douglas Diaz (Fanatic, North) before facing Ricardo Campello in the decider to see who would face Taty Frans in the final. Despite Kauli returning to the top of his form and fighting hard throughout the heat, Campello was on a mission and raised his level to eek out a 3-2 decision from the judges. In the two double elimination finals Taty Frans sailed well, but not to the top of his ability whilst Campello raised the stakes and busted out a ponch and a shuvit spock on top of his usual highly technical maneuver to dominate both finals.
After a short break action resumed with the fourth rounds of men’s and women’s single eliminations. On the top half of the draw in the men’s battle Taty Frans continued his winning ways advancing into the final through tough heats over Jace Panebianco, Colin Sifferlen (Starboard), Nicholas Akgazciyan (AHD, Neil Pryde) and Kauli Seadi (Naish, AHD). Meanwhile on the bottom half of the draw young Douglas Diaz (Fanatic, North) of Venezuela reveled in the dropping winds taking down Ruben Pedrisie (Naish), Victor Fernandez (Fanatic), Tonky Frans (Gaastra, AHD) and Ricardo Campello (JP, Neil Pryde) as he stormed through to the final.
Determined to fight for his podium position here in race for the King of The Caribbean Douglas Diaz executed a sensational routine in the final to take victory over Taty, performing moves such as Toucan 360’s, clew first chacho 540’s and clew first grubby diablos. In the men’s losers final Kauli Seadi (AHD, Naish) took revenge over Ricardo Campello (JP, Neil Pryde) and clinched third place after Ricardo sailed slightly below his normal standards and dropped two vital chacho attempts.
As it stands Ricardo now needs to win one more heat in the men’s double elimination tomorrow to wrap up the King of the Caribbean Title. If Campello loses, then Taty Frans can draw the title if he beats Douglas Diaz twice in the double elimination final.
In the women’s third double elimination battle, Iballa Moreno (Mistral, North) of Spain managed to take revenge on Tanja Emig of Austria before losing to her sister Daida for the chance to challenge Karin Jaggi (F2, Arrows) for the third round win. Raising her level dramatically from yesterday Daida sailed brilliantly in both finals to make it 2-1 overall against Karin after three rounds of double elimination.
By late afternoon as the winds dropped to 12-15 knot |
